It is official; for us at school, it is  winter now. It  is raining outside and there was just a flash of lightening. Our menu is winter foods too. Apples of all kinds, pears, clementines, satsumas, navel oranges and sugar snaps are great now.

On Monday, a mom and dad will be coming in to help us share about Chanukah. There will be potatoes to mix up into wonderful pancakes, fried, and then served with applesauce and sour cream.

We will make some more applesauce on Wednesday. The sauce we made for the feast was so good and easy to make. Granny Smith apples cut small, added to skillet ( or in our case an electric flying pan), clover honey, and cinnamon. Let cook until soft but not too mushy. Very yummy!

This morning’s trip to the Hollywood Farmer’s Market showed the beginning of a change in the seasons. The strawberries are almost gone, mangoes are coming to an end, and the peaches, cherries, cantaloupes, and watermelons are a thing of the past. In their place, are a great variety of apples, pears, valencia oranges, and late season plums. Heirloom tomatoes are still excellent. This week’s snack menu will reflect this transitional period. We will also try a few pumpkin items i.e. roasted pumpkin seeds and pumpkin pudding.

Snack this last few weeks have included apples grown in the foothills of Yosemite. They come from an orchard of my father-in-law’s ranch. We’re fortunate to get fruit for the school most of the year.

We try as often as possible to serve food that is organic and supportive of the growers; often that means Farmer’s Markets. We are still serving a blend blend of fall and summer fruits and vegetables.

The garden is in a state of waiting as the season changes. We have the last of the green peppers, the beans are finished, and the tomatoes are gone.

The evergreen strawberries are the lone productive garden plant. They have lots of flowers and we are watching as the set fruit is turning riper each day. The unseasonably cool and gray days aren’t helping. We look forward to planting the winter garden just after Halloween when we are sure no Indian summer heat will wipe them out.

We are delighted to find that we have children who love to eat and willing to try different things. Snack time at the school this first week was so fun; children were taking their time and chatting with each other. And when we put out the guacamole in the chip scoops, one child announced enthusiastically, “I love guacamole!”. You could feel the change in the room as the tentative kids announced they liked it too. Almost everyone had several. We will have a new thing every week for the kids to try. This week we will see if bean and cheese burritos are as big a hit with the new kids as they are with our returning ones.

We also will be having strawberries, amazing big, delicious ones. I was driving in Malibu Canyon and there was a road side stand with fabulous Oxnard strawberries. Of course, I asked my husband to pullover. (He said he already knew what I was going to ask; we have been together thirty years). We try and include local and farmer’s market produce whenever we can.

Welcome back to school! Snack this week will have the fresh fruits of the season and the familiar tastes that children will recognize. Learning to eat at the snack table with other children is one of the skills the new children will be learning. We would like the food to be comfortable so they can realax and enjoy themselves.

Eating at preschool is family style, with the children sharing plates of food. During the snack time, they learn to pour from little pitchers, ask others to “please pass the _____”, and learn to help others at the table.

It is also a great time for conversation. We encourage the children to tell us about what they are doing outside of school. We have great conversations about families, trips, dreams, pets, jokes, and upcoming events. The art of conversation, talking, listening, waiting for your moment, and being on topic are valuable life skills. As teachers, we love hearing what is on the children’s minds as well as sharing our own lives.

    This week’s snack menu is:

    Monday morning

Bananas, Cheddar Cheese Sandwiches on Whole Wheat Sandwich Thins, apple juice

    Monday afternoon

Oats and Honey bars, blueberry yogurt, cran-grape juice

    Tuesday Morning

We have a wonderful bounty of limes to squeeze this week and turn into individual lime pies. Cooking is an integral part of the program and the children have gotten quite good at mixing, measuring, and stirring. The pies will add a new skill, the egg beater. It has been part of the water play but now it is time to transfer the skill to cooking. Egg beaters present a good challenge to the brain, asking it to do something different with the right and left sides of the body. We know from brain research that activities such as these help the left and right hemispheres of the brain work more effectively together. In a play base manner, we weave many of these kinds of activities into our program.
